Beyond its 16 sunny beaches, the Andalusian city of Malaga in southern Spain on the shores of the Mediterranean has a fascinating cultural side. It's the birthplace of Pablo Picasso and the Spainish has reinvented itself in recent year, inaugurating museums for all tastes.
If you take the combination of sea and culture and add a lively atmosphere, plenty of tapas served in its bars, areas such as the port that have been transformed to offer a more modern image, and monuments with centuries of history, the result is an exciting city everyone would want to discover. Because if everyone says that Malaga is prettier than ever then it must be true.
Malaga is a city full of historical spots such as the Alcazaba, one of the largest Moorish fortresses in Andalusia, or Gibralfaro Castle, which offers the best views over the city. At the foot of the castle there is a Roman theatre and an old town to stroll around. Its streets offer attractions such as the Atarazanas Market to have a vermouth, and monuments like the Cathedral, known as ‘La Manquita’ (one-armed), due to its unfinished right tower.
In the city of Picasso, you can visit the excellent Picasso Museum in the centre, and the home where he was born. In recent years Malaga has inaugurated the Carmen Thyssen Museum, the only Pompidou Centre outside France - its coloured cubes have become an icon, or the St Petersburg Russian Museum Collection. If you prefer a more underground culture, look out for the Centre for Contemporary Art, the street art on the city’s buildings, and the alternative establishments in the Soho neighbourhood.
Malaga is also known for its Film Festival, its Holy Week, its innovative restaurants.
In Summer 2022, Aurigny will fly direct to Malaga from Guernsey.
Enjoy coves of turquoise water so clear that boats seem to be floating in the air, venture into hidden caves, visit lighthouses with endless views, and see unforgettable sunsets. That’s life on the largest of the Balearic Islands, Majorca a place of idyllic landscapes where the mountains are just a step away from the beach, and the inspiration for generations of writers, musicians and painters.
The biggest of Spain's Balearic Islands, Majorca has long been a favourite with the world’s travel pack. It’s got extremely good looks on its side, after all. We’re talking tiny inlets, sweeping bays and sandy coves, all lapped by turquoise waters. And away from the coast, it’s a case of sweet-smelling pine forests, hidden hamlets and jagged mountain peaks.
A trip to the island could start in Palma, its lively capital, and continue in villages where you can forget about the outside world, like Valldemosa or Sóller. The climate is always mild, and everywhere you go, you’ll find the true Mediterranean lifestyle and cuisine. Because Mallorca really embodies the Mediterranean spirit.
Palma is one of the most delightful cities to explore on foot in all of Spain. As well as the Cathedral, Bellver castle, Es Baluard museum and the Pilar i Joan Miró Foundation, we recommend venturing into its courtyards, eating at restaurants with cuisines from all over the world, shopping in the exclusive boutiques of Passeig del Born, and soaking up the sun at a pavement café.
You’ll be tempted to stay there forever, but Palma is just the entrance to a fascinating island. Travellers will find enchanting villages like Valldemossa, where the composer Chopin and the writer George Sand stayed in the Charterhouse. Very close by is Sóller, where you can take an antique train. Other options include Deià and the stunning gardens of Son Marroig, Pollença and its lively port, or Alcúdia and its unspoilt coves.
In all of these places, you can try the “slow food” trend in Michelin starred restaurants, at the harbours, or in the cake shops where they sell the famous ensaimada pastry. You can take the opportunity to buy some local crafts, or just relax over a cocktail in any of Majorca's exclusive beach clubs.
Aurigny are flying to Majorca direct from Guernsey in Easter 2021. Flydirect are operating direct flights from May 2022 for the summer season.
